Young Authors website

Young Authors is a biennial event which has been a tradition at Calvin for the
past 30 years. Each gathering brings together students in grades one through
five to hear authors and illustrators talk about their work, and offers the
opportunity for them to share their own stories in small groups with other
students from around the state. We are excited at the prospect of having your
elementary school students come to Calvin’s campus to participate in this
event.

Next spring, we are pleased to welcome authors David Wiesner and author Jim
Murphy as our featured presenters.

David Wiesner is one of the most original and imaginative children’s book
illustrators working today. He has illustrated more than twenty award-winning
books for young readers. As the recipient of Caldecott Medals for his books
Tuesday, The Three Pigs, and Flotsam, Wiesner is only the second person in
that award’s long history to have won three times. Two of his other titles,
Sector 7 and Free Fall, have also been selected as Caldecott Honor Books.
Wiesner specializes in books that tell fantastical-often dream-like
stories-using rich, color illustrations but no words.

Jim Murphy is the award-winning author of more than 25 books about American
history. Two of his books--An American Plague: The True and Terrifying Story of
the Yellow Fever Epidemic of 1793 and The Great Fire--received Newberry Honors.
Murphy’s titles appear on innumerable “Best Book” lists from
organizations and journals like the American Library Association, Publisher’s
Weekly, School Library Journal, and Booklist. His voracious appetite for
reading about subjects he finds interesting, and his incredible skills as a
researcher, have helped him create a wide range of entertaining, provocative,
and multi-layered books for young readers.

Registration for Young Authors is $10.00 per student without a t-shirt and
$15.00 per student with a t-shirt. If you would like to receive registration
materials when we send them out in January, please visit our website at

We look forward to hearing from you soon, and hope to see you--and your
students--at Calvin next spring!
